The days have pretty much passed when "historic home" was merely a code for "old" and the last refuge for the cash-strapped who couldn't afford a newer home.

These days, so-called historic homes, especially those in designated historic neighborhoods, have become valuable properties. In many cases, these homes gain value faster than their newer counterparts.

Fixing them up can be labors of love, and expensive ones at that. Remodeling can be dicey, especially if the homes are in designated historic districts, with guidelines about acceptable alterations.
